H7/js6 Fit Chart (hole-basis, transition fit)

The loosest transition fit, averaging close to zero clearance. Assembled by hand or with a mallet; for parts that must be centred yet removable: gears and pulleys on shafts (torque carried by a key).

Deviations of hole H7 and shaft js6, and the resulting maximum / minimum clearance (negative values mean interference). Nominal sizes 0–500 mm, values in mm.

Max. clearance = hole upper deviation − shaft lower deviation; min. clearance = hole lower deviation − shaft upper deviation; a negative result is an interference. Each row applies to the whole size range shown.

What is the hole-basis system?

The hole is the datum (H, lower deviation 0) and different fits are obtained by changing the shaft tolerance. Holes are made with fixed-size tools such as reamers and drills, which are costly, so keeping the hole and varying the shaft is more economical; the hole-basis system is therefore generally preferred.

FAQ

Is H7/js6 a loose fit or a tight fit?

It is a transition fit (hole-basis system). The loosest transition fit, averaging close to zero clearance. Assembled by hand or with a mallet; for parts that must be centred yet removable: gears and pulleys on shafts (torque carried by a key).

How much clearance does H7/js6 give at Ø10?

The H7 hole is made to 10(+0.015/0) and the js6 shaft to 10(+0.0045/-0.0045). At the loosest that gives clearance 0.0195, at the tightest interference 0.0045 (mm).

Can I use a stock dowel pin as the shaft?

Stock dowel pins come in h6, h7, m6 (plus tolerance) and minus tolerance (0/-0.02). Put the hole tolerance (H7) and the application in your enquiry and we will tell you which one fits as it is.

Tell us the tolerance on your drawing and we will match it to stock. Write the size as 8(0/-0.015) or 8h7 and e-mail it with material, length and quantity to sfp@sfp-tw.com, or check availability directly in the online catalog. Stock dowel pins come in h6 / h7 / m6 as well as minus and plus tolerance; whenever the tolerance zone of a stock part lies entirely within the acceptance range on your drawing, it can ship straight away with no wait for custom production.

Values follow ISO 286-1; the table was cross-checked cell by cell against three independent sources on 2026-08-26 (6,674 cells agree, 0 errors). Coverage: shafts a–z and the corresponding uppercase holes, IT1–IT13, nominal sizes 0–500 mm. cd/ef/fg/za/zb/zc, sizes above 500 mm and grades above IT13 are not included: the tool reports "not found" and never extrapolates.
