About this category

Internal retaining rings that sit in a groove inside a bore to stop a part coming out - the counterpart to the S rings used on shafts. All three names are used in Taiwan: C ring as the general term, R type for this bore version, S type for the shaft version. The number after the R is the bore diameter, so R20 fits a 20 mm hole. Stocked in black-oxide carbon steel and stainless.

How to choose

• Measure the bore diameter, not the groove - measuring in the groove reads large and gives the wrong size.
• C ring is just the general name - what matters is whether it fits in a bore (R type) or on a shaft (S type).
• Internal rings hold by springing outwards, the opposite of external rings; the two are not interchangeable.
• If the exact size is out of stock an R ring can go slightly larger (it grips tighter), never smaller.
• Groove width and depth must match the ring thickness or the ring will pop out.
