About this category

External retaining rings that snap into a groove on a shaft to stop a part sliding off. In Taiwan these are called C rings as a general term, then split into S type for shafts and R type for bores - this page is the shaft type. The number after the S is the shaft diameter, so S10 fits a 10 mm shaft. Stocked in black-oxide carbon steel and stainless, with DIN and US size series, for shafts from 3 to 290 mm.

How to choose

• Measure the shaft outside diameter, not the groove - measuring in the groove reads small and gives the wrong size.
• C ring is just the general name - what matters is whether it fits on a shaft (S type) or in a bore (R type).
• External (shaft) and internal (bore) rings are opposites and cannot be swapped.
• If the exact size is out of stock an S ring can go slightly smaller (it grips tighter), never larger.
• The same shaft diameter can call for different groove dimensions across DIN, US and JIS - check before substituting.
