About this category

Dowel pins ground to a deliberate plus tolerance (mostly m6), slightly larger than the nominal hole so they stay put once pressed in — unlike slip-fit pins they cannot be pushed in or pulled out by hand. For locating holes that will not be taken apart again. 1–20 mm diameter, 3–580 mm long, about half carbon steel and half stainless.

How to choose

• m6 presses in, h6/h7 slips in. They look identical, so always state the tolerance when ordering.
• Ream the hole first — press-in force varies a lot with hole tolerance.
• Hard to remove once fitted; use internally threaded pins where the pin must come out.
