About this category

Brass threaded inserts, pressed or heat-set into plastic so that a plastic housing can take a metal screw and be assembled and stripped repeatedly without stripping the thread. Sized as thread x length (outside diameter), e.g. M1.6*2.5 (OD 3.2). Common in plastic enclosures, 3D printed parts and electronics. From M1.6 up, usually with several lengths and outside diameters per thread size.

How to choose

• All three figures matter: thread sets the screw, OD sets the pilot hole, length sets the depth.
• For heat setting, control temperature and press speed - too fast and the plastic cannot flow, so grip suffers.
• A larger OD grips better at the same thread, but the wall must be thick enough or it will crack.
