Fastener Standard Numbers — What Is ISO 4762, 10642, 7380?
European purchase orders and parts lists often identify a fastener only by its standard number — sometimes just 4762. The number itself tells you the part type. This guide covers 33 common part types and their ISO / DIN numbers; 28 of them are stocked by SFP Precision in Taiwan.
Full designations work too: ISO 4762-M3X18-A2, ASME B18.3 .31-18 X .63 SST 18-8 SHCS
Designations follow a fixed order: standard → size → material. For the most common socket screw:

Other parts read the same way:

Number lookup
Numbers on the same card are the international (ISO) and older German (DIN) standards for the same part type; common sizes are generally interchangeable, with small differences in head or thread length for some sizes.

Reading inch (ASME) descriptions
Inch socket screws are often described like this:
ASME B18.3Inch socket screw standard
-
2-56#2 thread 56 TPI
-
.383/8 in long (rounded)
-
SST 18-818-8 stainless = 304

SSCPSet screw, cup point
SSFPSet screw, flat point
SSOPSet screw, oval point
#10-32No. 10, fine thread UNF
.31 / .635/16 in / 5/8 in
Inch and metric countersunk heads are not interchangeable Inch FHCS (ASME B18.3) have an 82° head; metric ISO 10642 heads are 90°. In the wrong countersink the head bears on one ring only and will not sit flush.
What is ISO 4762? ISO 4762 is the hexagon socket head cap screw (SHCS). It replaced the German standard DIN 912.
How do I read ISO 4762-M3X18-A2? ISO 4762 is the part type (socket head cap screw), M3X18 is thread M3 and length 18 mm, A2 is 304 stainless steel.
Can an inch FHCS replace an ISO 10642 screw? No. Inch flat head socket cap screws (ASME B18.3) have an 82 degree head, while ISO 10642 has a 90 degree head, so the countersinks differ.
