Zinc-plated hex bolts sized entirely in inches, 1/4" to 1" diameter and 1/2" to 8" long, for US-built equipment, imported machinery and structures drawn in inches. They look much like the metric zinc hex bolts in the same section, but the thread pitches are completely different and the two are not interchangeable.

How to choose

• Inch threads come in UNC (coarse) and UNF (fine); the same 1/2" has two different pitches, and the nut must match.
• Never force a metric nut onto an inch bolt - the first turn or two may engage before it strips the thread.
• Across-flats sizes are in inches too; most metric sockets will not fit, so check your tools first.
