About this category

Split lock washers - cut through and twisted so the two ends sit at different heights. Tightening flattens the coil, and the stored spring force keeps pressure on the nut while the sharp cut ends bite into the bearing faces to resist vibration loosening. That is the basic difference from a plain washer: plain washers spread load, spring washers resist loosening. Sized as inside x outside x thickness, mostly 304 stainless with a few 316, in metric and inch.

How to choose

• Fit the spring washer directly under the nut - stacking it on a plain washer stops the ends biting.
• It only works once flattened; if it is not compressed there is no spring force at all.
• One thread size has several inside, outside and thickness combinations - match all three.
• Do not reuse a washer that has been flattened and lost its spring on anything important.
