Spring steel wire clips bent into an R shape, also called R-clips or hairpin cotter pins. The straight leg goes through the cross hole in a shaft or pin while the curved leg springs around the shaft body, so they fit and release by hand instead of needing the legs bent open like a split pin - ideal where parts come apart often. Codes such as R-4 and R-8, half zinc-plated carbon steel and half 304 stainless, 1-6 mm wire. This section also carries B type clips.

How to choose

• Two things must match: the wire must pass the cross hole, and the sprung leg must clip over the shaft diameter.
• They hold by spring force, which fades with repeated use - replace them once the grip is loose.
• For heavy vibration or safety-critical joints, a split pin with bent-over legs is still more secure.
