About this category

Split pins (cotter pins), folded into two legs that are bent apart after passing through a hole so the pin cannot back out — the cheapest and most direct locking method, usually paired with a slotted nut or used to retain a clevis pin. Half zinc-plated carbon steel, half 304 stainless. 1–20 mm diameter, 6–200 mm long.

How to choose

• The quoted diameter is the pin, matched to the hole — not to the nut size.
• Once the legs have been bent the pin is deformed; always fit a new one.
• Length must allow the legs to be bent over without fouling adjacent parts.
